Enterprise storage management is the management of both data and physical storage assets to ensure optimal utilization of those assets while minimizing enterprise risk. This is accomplished through storage management strategies, processes, and technologies that ensure that storage costs are appropriate to the relative business value of the data being stored.
Info-Tech sees growing crisis potential in the practice of seeking to mollify the storage demands of the business by simply purchasing more capacity. Disk is cheap and getting cheaper, the argument goes, so the tendency is to throw capacity at the problem. This argument represents a serious gap in understanding of the true costs of enterprise storage, and fails to solve some fundamental problems.
